Artist In Residence - Podcaster with Yarra City Arts.
This paid residency through the Working for Victoria Program, utilised my audio recorded and post production skills to create short and longer form podcasts focusing on their main projects at the time, the Room to Create Studio Artists at Collingwood Yards, Public Art Artists Profiles, and promoting the venues and bookers included in the 2021 Leaps and Bounds Festival.
The residency also supported the development of a personal project, which is planned for outcome as part of my Masters exhibition as a multi-channel community public work at Billibellary’s Place/Dight’s Falls. Yarra City Council has generously awarded funding for Wurundjeri cultural consultation to develop this work into 2022 for exhibition.
Each podcast was recorded (using my own mics and recording equipment), edited (ProTools) by myself as Podcaster, as well as composition of original atmospheric music and field recordings of place.
The outcome of the residency was 21 podcasts hosted on their Soundcloud page for archival and promotional use. When Narrm-Melbourne went into lockdown in July 2021, many podcast interviews were done remotely using ‘riverside.fm’, a web-based recording site which records remotely at each end of the call, utilising each user’s microphone and computer, this was a very successful process of remote recording podcast interviews and conversations. Each interview was also transcribed for inclusion on the Yarra City Arts website along with the podcasts.
The residency was especially useful for learning more about and developing a deeper understanding of the processes of cultural consultation for creative projects in Yarra, and learning more about community relationships in terms of Indigenous community, ethics, responsibility and reciprocity and connection. The sustained experience of researching, developing questions and interviewing was very beneficial to my current position as a researcher with potential to include oral histories in future reciprocal creative work.
